The Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

The Graduate Record Examination is a product of the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The GRE is designed to test your ability to handle graduate level work. It is sectioned into verbal, quantitative and analytical reasoning questions.

The GRE is a CAT
The GRE is a computer adaptive test (CAT). This has some important restrictions:

  • You will be given only one question at a time (one per screen, that is)
  • The questions are generated, in part, based of the responses you give (how well you answer them). This is based on covering concepts and question types.
  • You cannot scratch answers in the margins, and you may want to rewrite the questions.

In some areas of the world where the CAT is not available, a paper-based GRE will be administered.

GRE Subject Tests
These may be part of your testing requirement. GRE Subject Tests come in each area (for example, English, Chemistry, Psychology, etc. There are 16 all together). Whether or not you need to take a GRE Subject test will depend on admission requirements as prescribed by any of the schools to which you have applied.
