Kaplan University is one of the more recognized of online universities. Kaplan is actually a very old name in education. The company was founded in 1938 by Stanley Kaplan, who tutored students in a small Brooklyn apartment. In the 1970s Kaplan branched out, and its stock soared, when it entered the test preparation business. In 1985, Kaplan was purchased by the Washington Post company, and in 1994, Kaplan began to move into the area of online education, acquiring small education companies already online.
